Renegade

Creative Concept

I had an amazing opportunity to shoot a personal project with my good friend, Danny Owens. He asked me to assist him on this styled shoot that he put together, titled Renegade.

The shoot was inspired by early western photographs of female frontier protagonists. The Grungy, firm, dark images help capture the style of the day.

This was my first time getting to shoot portraits of a model and in a studio AND with flash. All that to say, i hop you enjoy the images.

Images were shot using my Contax G1 on Portra 400 & Lomography Potsdam.

These first images were shot on a white studio cyc with a small, homemade backdrop.

We used two strobe lights to light the scene as well. The desired look was more of a slightly overexposed shots with Angus the bull scull as a prop.

It was interesting shooting with strobes for the first time. I used a Canon 5D to get my settings dialed in then set them on my Contax. When firing off a few shots, I noticed the lights would fire twice sometimes. It was odd as my shutter speed stayed the same. After reviewing the images, they seemed to come out anyways. This may have been due to the first flash for the focus, have been unable to find out why.

Following the first look, we transitioned over to a far different setup. The black on black on black style was to give very little, if any background while focusing on the facial expressions and body motion.

These images were shot with Lomography’s Potsdam 100, black and white film.

This look turned out to be my favorite. I was very nervous about how the strobes would work and if I would get the same or similar result that I saw on the digital camera. We placed the model on a black seamless and had one light to the right (to separate the subject from the background) All in all, these are exactly what I was hoping for.

Overall, I was very pleased with the results of the shoot. I had such a great time learning and trying out things that I had only previously seen on YouTube tutorials. I hope you enjoyed these images as much as I did.

I would love to heat how you felt about the images and wold love to answer any questions you may have about it, so you know how the bloggers do…Comment down below!
